Using 2021 Trends

First up, let’s talk about trends as most people associate trends mainly with fashion. However, trends affect all businesses from food, technology, home accessories and stationery.

To develop new products you need to be inspired. Trends can be seen as the inspiration you need to be creative.

The key thing is to look for inspiration outside of your product niche to get inspired.

But I also love to look deeper than design trends of fads and look at the macro trends. Macro trends look at the big picture and how customer behaviour is changing. They are the social, cultural, political and environmental factors that shift people’s thoughts and behaviours.

Customer’s attitude will change first and a trend, or movement, tips into the mainstream when their behaviour changes too.

Three Macro Trends

In this podcast we discuss three macro trends influencing customer behaviour in 2021 and beyond. These include:

  • Regeneration
  • Maximalism
  • Simple Joys

I also share how these 2021 macro trends filter down into a wide variety of product categories.

Using Inspiration

If you take anything away from this episode, I love for you to remember that when developing your product range you need to take into account three things, as shown in this Venn diagram.

  • Your purpose – why you do what you do and your brand story.
  • Being relevant – taking inspiration from what is happening.
  • Your customer – identifying what they need and how you help them.
